Hey all-
I rarely add creations to this blog. As some of you know I'm a music business major in college right now. Currently I'm in Music History- and we were asked to compose our own original Romantic Lied... Franz Schubert is a good fellow to listen to if you're blanking on what those are...
Anyways- for this assignment, we needed to notate on our original work on Finale- which was TERRIBLE for me! We also needed to submit a recording.
The Lied is called "A Dance in Cold Water" and it's inspired by the thought of two lovers becoming victims of a failed relationship. While I can say easily this thought came from personal experience, I can also say SoGoPro had a LOT to do with why I was even able to put thoughts, to notation, to sound. I've always wanted to be a stronger composer on other instruments beyond the Flute. Thinking about obstacles always makes me think of SGP, because every day they overcome many obstacles that in the long run, will amount to success, and that's inspiring.
A Lied features solo voice and piano. Those of you who are familiar with my musical taste, I'm all about the harmony, so this was an odd place to be for me. I couldn't add harmony to the vocals- because it's solo voice- so I had to satisfy my "harmony passion" in the piano part. The piano is an instrument I can easily improv on, but for the life of me, cannot "write" for. Well, it took me long enough, but I managed to pull it off, I think.
One other key thing to note about a Romantic Lied, is the music is meant to stand alone- to be able to tell the story with or without the added poem. Music and lyrics work together to bring an entire picture into view, so to speak. Listen to the words versus the piano and perhaps you'll be able to experience in your mind some of the imagery.
I'm interested in feedback- feel free to leave your thoughts!
Might I add- that is me singing- and no, it's not my most favorite recording- but I figure you all won't mind the imperfections :) Lyrics are below :)
"A Dance in Cold Water"
A dance in cold water
You and I- moving together
Nobody said we couldn't make it
Out alive
Jumping in this world of water
Meant for a stronger pair
We discover
Darkness
Falling faster
and we've run out of breath
Pulling us down
This didn't have to be fatal
Stabbing us
The cold paralyzes us
With no shame
No shame
We found Darkness
A mind of it's own
We don't have a say anymore
It's too late
The tide controls us
We have to give everything we brought
Our breath, our lives, our memories- all gone.
Sinking with our
Wreckage
We will float lifeless forever
To save you from
This painful, fatal
Cold
Maybe ya'll will start writing for the SoGoPro Street Team Song....
